Wine label "Freigang" alcohol-free for Schloss Wachenheim – all four varieties with a gangster bar motif in the background
Freigang – Label Design

Schloss Wachenheim is launching “Freigang,” a completely alcohol-free wine line: four varieties – Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Grenache Rosé, and Merlot – each at 0.0% vol, with a screw cap and its own distinctive character on the label.

From the crisp, floral Sauvignon Blanc and the lively Chardonnay to the fruity, rounded Rosé and the velvety Merlot: each variety gets its own gangster figure – and its own escape story.

My Services

The name “Freigang” plays with a double meaning: prison leave – and the free flow from the bottle, completely without alcohol. Precisely this wink should be palpable on the label, without the wine itself appearing like a novelty item. The imagery deliberately quotes 1930s film noir: black-and-white photography, classic cars, trench coats, and hats – gangsters who have just made their getaway.

For the series, I developed two silhouettes – a male and a female gangster figure – from which the color concept for all four varieties emerges: gold for the Sauvignon Blanc, a cool blue for the Chardonnay, Bordeaux for the Rosé, violet for the Merlot. The color immediately assigns the bottle to the correct variety on the shelf, while the gold-embossed wordmark “Freigang” and the handwritten “with the taste of…” hold the series together as a whole.

For design development, illustration, and final artwork, I accompanied the line from the first character sketches to the production-ready files for all four bottle colors – coordinated with the screw cap and the different glass colors of white, rosé, and red wine.
