Here’s a little time-lapse for things that usually take a few hours: the construction of one or more canvases, because at some point you calculate what ready-made canvases cost - and from that moment on you do everything yourself, then you put stretcher mouldings together, cut cotton canvases, build frames, clamp up. Not particularly creative, but artisanal. I never thought I’d manage it well, but with the years I get better and better. #artprocess #artistlife #artstudio #brazilianartist #afroartist
I’ve spent the last few days stocking up on materials for my artwork – paper, passe-partouts, frames. My local supplier didn’t have what I needed, so I made my way to another one. (For anyone who isn’t part of the art scene: yes, there are huge warehouses where creative people can find everything their hearts desire.)
Then came the less glamorous part: mounting each piece, labelling and signing it, packing it into bags along with a little handmade card, and pricing everything. On Saturday, I can finally take them along to sell. That’s work too – just not the creative sort. It’s structured, systematic and, to be honest, a bit boring at times.
And just as the loneliness and monotony was reaching its peak, I had a visitor: the neighbour’s cat. A proper stray, but very friendly. I have to admit, I’m in love. And just like that, my summer holidays have come to an end. I spent them in Portugal — long days at the beach, and so much art-making. Coming back to everyday life is anything but easy — but I’m still happy to be back in my studio.
This month I had a little trouble paying my studio rent on time. Not the best feeling, I`ll be honest. But here`s the thing about being broke and stubborn enough to keep an art studio anyway: the universe has a weird sense of humor. Because just when the money`s tight and the struggle is, let`s say, characterful — some lovely neighbor shows up and gifts you a 1.80 x 1.10 m canvas. Just like that. A canvas the size of a small door. So now I`m standing here, rent panic slowly fading, staring at this beautiful blank giant like: okay, okay... what do we make of YOU?Let`s see. Let`s see. Today I’m showing some little details from my studio. When you paint, you always need a lot of stuff. Or you just buy a lot of stuff because it’s fun to try new things. At some point the stuff becomes too much and you have to start organizing it. Here I have an IKEA shelf where I organize my paints and everything I need in terms of tools and oil painting mediums. I also have a little weakness for collecting special packaging — and every now and then my neighbors gift me something too. Quite a lot — but maybe one day I’ll manage to pare it back down again…
Summer in Hamburg. Light, warmth, short sleeves – my operating temperature.
And that’s exactly why I’m especially drawn to the studio right now. The sun streams in differently, the colours glow differently, even the work feels lighter. Hours with paint, canvas and the feeling that something is taking shape. And without freezing 🥶
Sure – half of Hamburg is at the Alster, in Schanzenpark, in Planten un Blomen or down by the Elbe. But in here it’s pretty perfect right now. And if you’re in the area: come by. Door’s usually open, wine, coffee and tea ready, new pictures on the wall.
And if the urge to get out does hit: sketchbook, pencils, small watercolour set come along. Outside is studio too. Just with better light.
A long break from painting. After working on two installations, it felt strange to simply go back to painting colourful, abstract pictures – almost trivial given everything that’s happening in the world right now. But perhaps those were just excuses. Even dark times need good art. Now, for the first time in months, I’m venturing back into large-scale work. I’ll just get started – the painting will decide for itself where it goes from here.
In my installation “repellent“ I use the motif of thorns in the form of body suit or armour. The thorns serve as artistic material and at the same time as a metaphor: they embody protection and demarcation, but also pain, vulnerability, and resilience. The suit is created as a sculptural object and wearable work that makes the ambivalence of the female body visible.
The background history of this installation is, that I am witnessing how the social and political conditions for women are becoming increasingly harsh. As a mother of a daughter I am worried that women’s rights, which were long taken for granted, are once again being questioned or actively restricted. At the same time, the risk of women becoming targets of violence — physical, psychological, or digital — is growing. Hostility, assaults, and sexualized degradation are becoming particularly acute online. These developments are creating a climate in which female identity cannot develop freely without being exposed to high risk. I do not want to abstract this reality, but rather make it physically tangible.
Making of „Repellent“ - a suit made of thorns, addressing feminine defensiveness and resilience. The process of creating the piece was physically dangerous and charged with tension, mirroring the fragile balance between protection, vulnerability, and strength. The work challenges traditional perceptions of femininity and invites to a closer reflection on boundaries and self-preservation.

For a century, GEDOK has been a powerful force for the visibility, support, and recognition of women artists – especially in times when female artistic voices were overlooked or excluded.
GEDOK’s history reminds us how essential strong networks are: not only for careers, but for shaping culture itself. Grateful to be part of this moment and inspired by the generations of women who paved the way.
I am currently in the midst of setting up my Exhibition work „repellent“ – everything is slowly falling into place and the concept is gradually coming together.
Once again, I have left painting behind and interpreted my theme in an installation. The work, which deals primarily with femicide and the resulting female defenciveness, is so physical and potentially dangerous that it has been deliberately given its own space – not out of distance, but out of responsibility. This allows it to have an impact without causing anyone harm, while at the same time unfolding the tension inherent in it. Perhaps some of you will find the time to stop by. I would be delighted!

Unsere Ausstellung »Zuckersüs« geht in wenigen Tagen zu Ende.
Das Thema berührt mich auf besondere Weise, denn »Zucker« ist in meiner Herkunfts- und brasilianischen Familiengeschichte tief verwurzelt. Er trägt den Glanz von Reichtum und Macht – und zugleich den Schatten von Ausbeutung, Gewalt und Verlust.
Im 16. bis 18. Jahrhundert war Zucker ein Luxusgut, reserviert für jene, die auf dem Thron saßen. Ihre Süße gründete auf bitterer Arbeit, auf Menschenhandel und nicht zuletzt auf Tod.
Meine erste Installation (denn eigentlich bin ich Malerin) mit dem Titel »sweet empire« spielt mit dieser Ambivalenz: sinnlich, verführerisch, fast festlich – und gleichzeitig eine Enthüllung der verborgenen Geschichte von Abhängigkeit, Manipulation und kolonialer Macht.
In den letzten Wochen durfte ich viele berührende Gespräche führen und erleben, wie ihr meine Arbeit auf eure ganz eigene Weise interpretiert. Das inspiriert mich jedes Mal und erinnert mich daran, warum ich Kunst mache.
Ein großes Dankeschön an die wunderbaren Kuratorinnen und das starke Netzwerk der GEDOK.
